Dharma in Coal Drops Yard, Kings Cross
The next episode of A Collection Of… Spaces is with multidisciplinary designer & maker Dharma Taylor.
We met in Coal Drops Yard and walked along the Regent’s Canal towpath, talking about the different spaces that have shaped Dharma’s practice. Without a fixed studio space at the moment, Dharma works between home, teaching, shared workshops and the spaces she finds herself in.
Her practice moves between furniture, textiles and objects, with a particular interest in natural materials, colour, texture and the relationship between making and the environment. We discussed how working closely with other makers allows Dharma to learn new skills, develop ideas and bring them into finished objects. This includes her transition from fashion into furniture during lockdown, learning carpentry through a remote collaboration, and later working with Christopher Farr and Paul Smith.
We also talked about research, her residency with Iniva and the Stuart Hall Library, and the importance of building your own archive through books, conversations, observations and everyday experiences. Alongside this, we discussed teaching, motherhood, community and the idea of creating objects that can outlast us and carry a sense of permanence and legacy.
